JOHN GRIFFITHS
The CD presents 21 works by Miguel de Fuenllana, performed by John Griffiths on the vihuela, with a total playing time of 58 minutes and 32 seconds.
Its programme draws on Orphenica Lyra, Fuenllana’s collection published in Seville in 1554, a landmark of Spanish Renaissance instrumental music.
Eight fantasias reveal his distinctive approach to imitative counterpoint and carefully balanced musical structure; the programme also includes a tiento, a duo, and the plaintive song “Si los delfines mueren de amores.”
These original works are interwoven with intabulations—vihuela arrangements of vocal music—by composers including Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, Juan Vázquez, and Claudin de Sermisy.
The booklet describes Fuenllana’s music as both intellectually intricate and introspective, joining architectural proportion with rhetorical expression to engage the listener’s mind and emotions.
Griffiths aims for an intimate sound in keeping with music-making of the period, using thumb-out technique and two gut-strung vihuelas made in Seville by Alfonso Marín.
