SHILONG FAN

first prize 2024 "Seville International Guitar competition"

On this album, Shilong Fan explores Spain’s musical identity through the guitar, from Romantic lyricism to contemporary experimentation. Enrique Granados’s Valses poéticos opens a programme in which the elegance of salon music meets the vitality of zarzuela, the dances of Manuel de Falla and the flamenco-inspired works of Regino Sainz de la Maza. The Intermedio from Gerónimo Giménez’s La boda de Luis Alonso, alongside three iconic pieces by Paco de Lucía—Fuente y caudal, Guajiras de Lucía and Monasterio de Sal—reveals the expressive richness and rhythmic energy of this repertoire.

The album concludes with Rubens Askenar’s Taranta, which expands the guitar’s sonic possibilities through the use of a smartphone. Bringing tradition and innovation into dialogue, Shilong Fan performs with exceptional virtuosity, illuminating the connections between Spain’s popular musical roots and their transformation in the concert hall.
